Gentleman's Orkney Chair
A classic hooded Gentleman's Orkney chair with drawer below, c early 1900s. Original stained pine frame with carved detail to the arms, straw back rest / hood (oat grass sewn with bent grass) and a woven removable rush seat, original pine drawer below. In good original condition, structurally sound, the straw back is more fragile, and has had some repairs to stabilize the condition.
A true design classic, the Orkney chair with its distinctive straw back was one of the icons of the Arts and Crafts movement. Produced in the workshops of the Orkney Islands (Scotland), they were retailed by Liberty & Co.
