Pair of Orkney chairs

Pair of Orkney chairs
A matching pair of classic pine Orkney chairs, c early 1890s. It is very rare to find an original pair: a hooded gentleman's version with its matching ladies' chair. Original stained pine frames with carved detail to the arms, straw back rest / hood (oat grass sewn with bent grass) and a woven removable rush seat. These chairs are unusual in that they have decorative carved piping to the frame (uprights) and the rush is attached to the frame using pins instead of the usual stitching. Both are in very good original condition, with a historic repair to the arm of the ladies chair.
A true design classic, the Orkney chair with it’s distinctive straw back was one of the icons of the Arts and Crafts movement. Produced in the workshops of the Orkney Islands (Scotland), they were retailed by Liberty & Co.
Dimensions: Hooded: H140, W54, D54, Ladies: H84cm, W54cm, D54cm
