A classic pine Orkney chair, ladies' size, c early 1890s.  Original stained pine frame with carved detail to the arms, straw back rest / hood (oat grass sewn with bent grass) and a woven removable rush seat.  This chair is unusual in that it has decorative carved piping to the frame (uprights) and the rush is attached to the frame using pins instead of the usual stitching. In very good original condition, a historic repair to the arm.

A true design classic, the Orkney chair with it’s distinctive straw back was one of the icons of the Arts and Crafts movement.  Produced in the workshops of the Orkney Islands (Scotland), they were retailed by Liberty & Co.

Dimensions:  H84cm, W54cm, D54cm
